Central & East Java Trip - Day 8

--Surabaya--
View of the city from hotel room.
--1st Stop: Pasar Genteng--
After breakfast, we went to Pasar Genteng area to buy Kueh Lapis and my fav Honey cake.
Found a shop selling Honey cake. Owner of the shop was an Indonesian Chinese.
--2nd Stop: Cheng Hoo Mosque--
Driver drove us around to check out the city, and we happened to pass by Cheng Hoo mosque (郑和清真寺). It's interesting to see a mosque with Chinese architecture in a Muslim country. Need admission ticket, so we didn't go in to take a look.
Well, there's something more interesting than the mosque. Haha! Our driver blur blur and forgot to take his keys out. So, we were locked out of the van!!! Miss KH finally got to experience how to enter the van from the window. 不愧是NPCC的人~ Haha!
All of us were happily laughing, while E.W helped KH with a final push~!! Finally, we managed to get back into the van and headed for airport.
--3rd Stop: Juanda Int'l Airport--
The departure area.
Yes! We had our lunch at A&W again. Ordered their 2 pc chicken meal again. Simply delicious~~~
After lunch, "disaster" struck us when I saw that our plane was delayed for an hr. Nvm, we proceeded to check in and rotted at a cafe. Never did we know that we were going to rot there for 4-5 hrs.
Took pic of a Garuda Indonesia plane while waiting for my plane to come~
My dinner at the airport, Beef soup with salted egg. This was my first time eating salted egg white. I hated the egg yoke so I gave to someone else. Even the egg white was so salty....aiyo~
We were supposed to depart at 3.15p.m, but we still did not see our Valuair plane at 6plus. I was so envious of those taking Silkair when their plane arrived at 6plus. Finally, a Jetstar Asia plane came at 7pm, and we knew the Valuair plane got technical prob.
Well, at least some arrangements had been done, like providing KFC meals for stranded passengers.
Finally, we arrived at Changi at 10.45pm (Sg time). It was a long day for us and that was my budget airline experience for the 1st time. I'll try not to take them, but looks like I am going to use Jetstar for my upcoming trip......sobbzz~

Central & East Java Trip - Day 7

--1st Stop: Kawah Ijen--
It was another early day. Gotta wake up at 3am for our hike to Kawah Ijen. The journey to the lake was about 1.5 hours, and the agency had arranged 4-wheel jeeps for us. The jeep was better than the one we had at Mount Bromo. So overall, the journey to Ijen was quite a comfortable one.
We were there quite early, but there were already grps of tourists who went up to the lake for sunrise. We ate our packed breakfast provided by the hotel. I only ate the bread as I disliked hard boiled eggs. The temp was rather cold and I was shivering while eating my breakfast~~
Time check: 6.30a.m. This was the starting point of our 3km hike - Pos Paltuding. The hike is actually not that difficult, but the journey covered very steep slopes and that was about half of the journey? So it was pretty tiring la.
Kawah Ijen is famous for sulphur mining, and you cld see sulphur miners carrying n kg of Sulphur along the way. It's really a super tough job. Imagine they gotta walk 6km to and fro, carrying super heavy sulphur on their shoulders, and they gotta work in harsh conditions (smelling of sulphur smoke, which is poisonous). I really gotta salute to them.
We were hiking in the mist. The scenery was simply stunning! The wind was quite strong up in the mountains, and you cld hear the sound of the wind, and saw how fast the mist moved.
Ah Ching's stamina is always on the poor side, so the hike was not that easy for me. However, Tuan was the total opposite. Her stamina is better than mine since young, and now she got so much "training" in Shanghai. So, the hike was simply nothing to her la. In fact, she has to wait for us to climb up slowly lo! Haha!
Stunning view of the volcanoes nearby.

After hiking for n hours, we were getting close to Kawah Ijen!
Tada! Kawah Ijen was just a few more metres away~!

I think Ijen was much more stunning than Bromo's crater.

Lots of sulphur smoke coming out from the crater area. This was where the miners worked too.
The crater lake. The turquoise colour looked stunning right? But you know how acidic the lake water was?
There were lots of burnt tree trunks along the way. I am not sure when did Ijen volcano last erupted. Anyway, the burnt tree trunks were in all sorts of shapes, and they looked artistic somehow.
Time to walk back to Pos Paltuding. Another long long journey~~ I just loved the scenery. They made this hike worthwhile.
At 10a.m., we completed our hike!
--2nd Stop: Lunch--
Returned to Ketapang Indah, and checked out our rooms. Had lunch at a nearby restaurant, which was considered quite posh ard the area. However, their food was nowhere near "posh". I thought my simple lunch elsewhere fared better than what you see below.

KH's green curry duck...correct me if I'm wrong.

Aunt Jo's chicken...forgot it was BBQ or with some other sauce.

I regretted ordering this hot plate chicken. Damn pathetic right? I shld have ordered the curry duck or something else! Haiz~~~Only the pepper sauce was nice.
--3rd Stop: Inna Simpang Hotel, Surabaya--
It was a 8 hours ride from Banyuwangi to Surabaya. I didn't know it was that long! I sort of regret my decision to go Surabaya to catch our flight back home. Bali was actually the better option, as it was just an hr away via ferry! But well, we thought it wld be a waste to go Bali and return home without staying there for a day or two. Haiz....I think I can even do a half day trip in Bali, instead of wasting 8 precious hours in the van.

Pic was taken at nearly 9p.m. I was not confident of my choice to stay at Inna Simpang, as the review for this hotel was not gd. The hotel was old, but the rooms were surprisingly nicely kept and clean. Beds were comfortable, and it was a pleasant surprise for me. Haha!
--4th Stop: Dinner @ Tunjungan Plaza--
The reason why I chose Inna Simpang is because it was very close to the largest mall in Surabaya. We had a late dinner at A&W, and I haven't have that for ages! There are so many A&W in Java la.

The 2 piece chicken meal was simply delicious, and the root beer was good.

KH's chicken wrap.
I had not seen many Chinese from Yogyakarta to Banyuwangi, so it was a refreshing sight to see so many people looking similar like us in Surabaya. But well, they speak in Bahasa Indonesia la...haha!

Central & East Java Trip - Day 6

--1st Stop: Sunrise at Mount Penanjakan--
Highlight of the day is Mount Bromo, the most famous volcano in East Java. In order to watch the sunrise, we gotta wake up at 2.30 am!
At 3 am, we gotta take a 4-wheel jeep ride to Mount Penanjakan (2770m). There were many jeeps and the mountain roads were pitched dark. I really wondered how the drivers can drive so well with such road conditions. Anyway, the ride was rather bumpy, and I kept sliding left and right on my seat.
We were quite early, and managed to chop a good spot for photo-taking. It was super duper cold and I was shivering. Haha! My jackets and gloves were simply not enough to keep me warm. Imagine we reached at about 4am and gotta wait for another hr or so for the sunrise. Terrible!
There were many stars up above the sky, but my dig cam could not capture anything. Sobz~!
Finally, at 5.15 am, I managed to take a picture of the volcanoes in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Btw, pictures were taken at the peak of Mount Penanjakan.
Sunrise~~~~~
Stunning views of the volcanoes.
A closer look at the crater of Mount Bromo.
Mount Batok.
Sunrise~~~
If I am not wrong, this is Cemero Lawang, where my hotel was located at. Did not know that it was at such a good & stunning location...lol! From Mount Penanjakan, it looked like the houses are at the mountain edge, and one wld wonder why people chose to live there. Hahaha!
Sunrise at 5.43 am.
Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The crater with smoke is Mount Bromo (2392m), and beside it is Mount Batok (2470m, the only peak which is no longer active). The taller volcano in the background is Mount Semeru (3676m), the highest volcano in the island of Java. There are a few other volcanoes around them too, but I shall not list them here.
Sunrise pic taken by Tuan.
We drank some coffee at a coffee shop before moving on to our next stop, Mount Bromo.
The 4-wheel jeep, not the one I was in though.
Incident 1: I boarded the jeep & realised my prayer beads which was with me for 17 yrs went missing. I tried to look around the jeep and the road, but did not find it. I thought I cld have left it at the coffee shop, but I was pretty sure I did not removed my prayer beads there. Very puzzled. I did not want to delay our trip, so I decided it's time to say good bye to it. I was rather upset la...but well, maybe it's fate.
--2nd Stop: The Tengger Sand Sea, Mount Bromo--
This is the place which was covered by the mists.
You can either walk to the crater, or pay money to ride on a horse and travel across the sand sea.
Mist makes wonders. Loved the scenery.
We gotta climb up the stairs to reach the top of the crater. Time to excercise~!
View from the crater.
Mount Batok in the foreground, and Mount Penanjakan in the background.
A closer view of Mount Batok.
Mount Bromo's crater. The crater constantly let out sulphurous smoke, so it cld be quite smelly.

Sand sea.
Incident 2: May Leng lao shi lost her Iphone when we returned to the jeep parking area at the Sand Sea. She said she might have dropped it when she got off the horse. E.W tried to find her phone at the place where we got off the horses, while KH & I tried calling her mobile. In the end, we did not managed to find it, and we suspected one of the horse owners cld have taken her Iphone. Suddenly, my prayer beads seemed nothing hor? Haha!
It's ok now...May Leng lao shi got her Iphone 4...ha!
--3rd Stop: Breakfast at Cemera Indah--
Returned to our hotel for breakfast. The breakfast provided looked boring, so I ate my cup noodles instead.
View from outside the restaurant!
Stunning x2!
Cemera Indah.
Last pic of the hotel before we depart for Banyuwangi.
--4th Stop: Ketapang Indah Hotel--
Another long long journey to the hotel. After travelling for 3 hrs plus, we stopped by a local restaurant for lunch. I was happy to a long stretch of sea coast at Banyuwangi area. It is the most eastern regency of Java, and the gateway to Bali island via ferry.
Ketapang Indah is located at the beach, and there were lots of coconut trees around the resort.
The hotel was more like a resort to me. Did not expect the room to be so nice & comfy.
The garden area outside my room. There was a swimming pool and playground area. Liked the relaxing ambience of the resort.
There were a few types of accommodation. Ours were like 8 rooms in one block and with connected doors for 2 rooms each. There were others which is like our chalet.
At the beach area....and that's Bali island.
Volcanic beaches are dark brown in colour...plus very fine sands.
Time to hit the restaurant.
Did not take all the food we had...just a brief intro to some.
My Prawn burger.
KH's dessert, Pisang Gulung.
Tuan & my dessert, Coconut with Vanilla ice cream. Interesting combi~
